Since 2014, ZIP has been developing and testing tools to help achieve a predator-free Aotearoa. We’re making some of these available to support projects working to remove invasive predators and keep them out for good.
All products are field-tested in tough conditions to ensure they’re effective and reliable. Thanks to the support of our funders, we’ve had the freedom to learn by doing — making mistakes, refining our tools, and improving our techniques. Some of these tools are now available to the public, while others are still being refined.

Purpose: The ZIP H2Lure is a highly effective and low cost automatic device used to lure target species to be photographed or trapped.
The H2Lure automatically dispenses lure that is paired with a camera or trap. It dispenses 120ml of fresh mayonnaise to attract predators to site for either 6 or 12 months, without needing to be serviced over that period. The H2Lure can be purchased with either a tree mount or cage mount, both equally durable and weather-resistant.
The device uses a small hydrogen gas generating cell and a resistor to regulate the rate at which hydrogen gas is generated. The hydrogen gas pressurises a cavity behind a plunger that in turn pushes mayonnaise out of the body of the H2Lure. Similar technology is used around the world to dispense liquids, gels and granules for a wide range of purposes, including for dispensing oil, grease and medicines.
This is a new device that we’re continuing to develop and refine.

Purpose: ZIP bait tunnels securely contain, and keep fresh, toxic rodent baits of your choice.
The Bait Tunnel is designed to keep toxic bait secure. It was created with wet weather conditions in mind, allowing water to run through the bottom of the tunnel while baits remain high and dry in a bait cup secured to the middle of the tunnel. The long, robust tunnel also restricts access to the baits, minimising the risk to non-target species and people. The design makes it a suitable option for use in urban areas or around domestic animals. The device can be screwed shut and there are multiple options for anchoring it to the ground.
The H2Zero (toxic version of the H2Lure) can be fitted to the Bait Tunnel.
Purpose: Maximise the effectiveness and efficiency of trapping operations (catching over 20% more possums than a ‘standard’ raised set), while reducing potential risks to non-target species.
The ZIP PosStop takes a tried and true possum trap, the PCR No. 1 Leg-hold, and presents it in a highly effective raised platform. Each unit comes with a 2-year warranty, and consists of:
Glass fibre-reinforced plastic platform
High grade steel, zinc-coated PCR No. 1 Leg-hold Trap
Adjustable galvanised steel chain with bungee to improve animal welfare and prevent escapes
All fasteners required to install the PosStop as per our Installation Guide
Please note: Under Section 36 of the Animal Welfare Act 1999, it is a legal requirement that all live-capture traps (including the ZIP PosStop) are checked within 12 hours of sunrise every day. The PosStop trap platform is not compatible with the Victor No. 1 leghold trap; it can only be used with the PCR No. 1 leghold.
Purpose: An automatic lure device that regularly dispenses a small amount of non-toxic mayonnaise lure to attract rats, stoats, and possums to traps, bait stations and detection devices. Set in a metal tube and designed to be kea- and rodent-proof.
The ZIP MotoLure can easily be affixed to trees, trap lids, or bait tunnels. It contains:
stainless-steel chassis
motor driver (with a two year warranty)
motor bolt
60 ml syringe containing a fresh food lure (currently egg mayo)
Partial rotation of the motor driver each day forces the bolt to depress the syringe, and extrude a pre-programmed amount of lure. Each syringe is sealed from the elements, so the lure remains fresh up to the point of dispensing. We recommend using the H2Lure for automated luring. You may like to use the MotoLure in exposed areas or high rat numbers.
Purpose: Classifier is a software tool that makes it quicker and easier to manually review trail camera footage and record detections of target species.
We have made ZIP Classifier freely available for others to use, as a download from this web page.
It does this by:
Enabling a reviewer to quickly record detections using keystrokes associated with target species or other items of interest.
Automatically creating a metadata document with a summary of the information associated with each image (e.g. time, date, location).
Automatically sorting footage into folders for each keystroke category (for easy reference at a later date).
Please note: ZIP Classifier was developed for use with Microsoft Windows-based operating systems. It is not compatible with macOS, Linux or Android, and will not work on Chromebooks.

Stoat taking a toxic rodent placed below a MotoLure
Purpose: Stoats are notoriously cryptic and neophobic, and some may never interact with closed architectures such as a trap or tunnel. With elimination as the objective, stoat interaction must be maximised.
1080 injected into rodent carcasses was chosen over other baits in order to mimic the highly effective secondary poisoning result seen from aerial 1080 operations. Toxic rodents are placed in front of a trail camera to monitor uptake.
Purpose: A device which regularly dispenses a small dose of fresh Rodenthor (brodifacoum) gel daily for several months, without needing to be manually replaced. Securely mounted to a ZIP bait tunnel, it is specially designed to target rats in populated or sensitive areas.
Hydrogen gas pressurises and dispenses a small dose of fresh gel bait daily, continuing to attract rats for several months without needing to be manually serviced. Brodifacoum is an anti-coagulant that inhibits the clotting ability of blood. It is used extensively within New Zealand to control rats and possums, both privately and commercially. Rats do not taste it or feel any immediate effects when it is eaten, meaning they won’t develop an aversion to bait before a fatal dose is consumed.
Purpose: ZIP’s specially designed AI cameras are used as part of the detection network, allowing us to monitor the populations of both target predators and other species in the area.
When the infrared sensors detect body heat, the camera turns on. The thermal camera can operate day and night, has a long battery life, and can recognise our target species as well as non-target species. Once a day, the onboard A.I. system assesses all the images and decides what sort of animal it is. We then use a satellite or terrestrial network to allow immediate transmission of the classified images. These detections are then reviewed by our technical team and (if necessary) responded to immediately.
Purpose: The ZIPinn was designed to target rats and stoats with a 100% success rate, because when you’re aiming to remove every last predator, every catch counts!
This trap provides instant capture of a predator, positive confirmation of predator type and—because the predator is captured without damage to the body—its sex, age and breeding status. This information helps our team understand whether we need to respond to an individual or a possible emerging population.
The ZIPinn is designed to ensure that predators cannot trigger the trap and exit. It is a guaranteed catch, because every individual counts when we’re aiming for elimination. Animals that trigger a trap without being caught may learn to avoid control devices in future—making them much more difficult to eliminate.
They can be connected to a remote reporting node that reports any catch via terrestrial or satellite network so our team can quickly respond, similar to our A.I. camera detections. ZIPinn traps are incorporated into the detection network. They are also used as part of targeted ground-based responses where aerial tools are not suitable.
